Worked Out Better

September 5, 2022

Homemade ice cream is wonderful! During peach season here in Georgia, it is mandatory at every family gathering of ours to have a churn of freshly-made peach ice cream. My brother-in-law has been the master ice cream maker for many years, and he’s now passing his recipe and methods down to his sons.

As you well know, I love ice cream! I always get at least two cups of homemade ice cream…and often more. Each batch makes five or six quarts. We never have more than a quart left.

What do you do when you get a taste for this wondrous dessert between family gatherings? Sometimes it’s more than a month between birthday celebrations!

Joy and I, years ago, acquired a small electric ice cream churn at a yard sale. We never have used it much, and now it’s been packed up for three or four years. A month ago (click) a light bulb came on in my mind: Let’s find that little ice cream churn and make ourselves some peach ice cream! It’ll just be a quart or so, just right for two people. Oh boy!

I located that blessed machine. We got a hold of the family recipe, reduced the quantities appropriately, and set the process in motion. The directions told us how long the machine would run, so we sat down to read while it churned. At the set time it was not as hard as I would prefer ice cream to be, so I let it run ten minutes longer.

It did not get any harder, so Joy and I decided we’d eat it like it was, rather soft. It made enough for two meals’ desserts. So good!

A couple weeks later we made another batch, making slight corrections. It never got really hard, but it was very tasty!

What I’ve discovered is that we don’t have an ice cream machine. This little gem makes the best thick milk shakes anyone could want.

Proverbs 16:9, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Sometimes God takes our plans and makes them better.
