The Most Important Tool
The hammer was feeling mighty fine one day. He stood up tall on his handle and spoke in a big voice to the nail, "Hey, shrimp! I guess you know I'm the most important tool in the tool box. The carpenter used me all day yesterday. Show some respect! If you've got something to say to me, you'd better say 'Mr. Hammer' or I probably won't even answer you."
The nail, a bit surprised, decided the hammer was getting a little too big for his tool belt. "Oh, Mr. Hammer, your honor, your majesty and your so forth. It certainly does make one feel good to be used all day, doesn't it? I, too, am important, though. Without me, a house can't stay together. It's just a pile of lumber."
"Nail, you're nothing without me! You could only lie around, without me to drive you into the board," said the hammer.
"Without me, hammer, you could only tear things down," said the nail.
Just then, the carpenter came up. "Good morning, nail and hammer. Come get into the tool box, and please leave room for the saw, the drill, the chisel, the screwdriver and all the other tools. We're building a church, and I need all of you working together."
