Slippery Slope

July 3, 2023

It’s nice to be normal. There’s peacefulness in fitting in. Butting heads with others is unsettling. First choice for many of us is to do the things everyone else does, keeping our relationships smooth.

The problem with doing like everyone else is that ‘normal’ keeps changing. Standards keep sliding. We must work at staying normal, constantly changing! Everyone has a stopping point, with certain things they choose to never change, no matter what the rest of the world does. You and I will eventually be odd.

How odd will I choose to be?

Once I choose to deviate from the normal, I’m adrift. I’ve got to find something new to anchor my life to. Well, maybe I can be like everyone else except in a few chosen categories. No, I’m afraid that makes me especially weird.

I’ve got to keep some fixed point of reference, some North Star. I need something to ‘tie off’ to.

I’ve chosen to live by an old, old standard, left behind by an increasing majority of people. Christianity has standards anchored in the Bible, God’s instruction manual for life, an ancient but trustworthy source. No, much of our culture can’t humble themselves to its guidelines. Personally I’ve found abundant life by following Biblical standards. It’s not really important to me that this way of life is counter-cultural. When the Bible doesn’t agree with modern beliefs, I bend my life to conform with what it says. It works for me.

It’ll work for you.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path.” Proverbs 3:5-6
