Sing Noel, Leon!

December 10, 2022

Starting on the day after Thanksgiving, I hope to hear Christmas music on every radio station. I look forward to it. Am I being unrealistic? Many radio stations run their regular assortment of songs, but provide non-stop Christmas music if you’ll go to their website. Sorry, that won’t work for me. When I get up in the morning, it’s my habit to turn on my radio, not my computer.

If I do find a station with Christmas music, I’m particular about the kind of songs I want to hear. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, our savior. If most of the songs center on Santa or “all I want this year is you, baby,” then I’ll just turn off the radio and pick out a CD.

I don’t mind a little “White Christmas” or “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” sprinkled in. I can enjoy that. What I really want, though, is to hear the great story of Jesus’ birth, when God came to earth as a little baby. Venerable carols like “Silent Night” or “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night” tell the story well, and more recent songs like “Mary Did You Know” and “Christmas Is All in the Heart” focus on the spiritual side of the holiday. I want to fill my mind with things that point me to God.

It”s easy to get off course. What you fill your mind with is what steers your days, so I need to hear the best, and read the best, and watch the best. Give me more of what brings me closer to God.

Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
