Road Repair

September 12, 2022

I love a smooth road. I’m afraid not all roads are like that.

One nearby stretch of road has a short roller coaster section. Driving along at fifty-five miles an hour, suddenly the car feels like it’s riding an ocean wave, up and down and up and down. I like that sensation on amusement park rides, but it’s unsettling in a car.

One city street I travel on regularly has a disproportionate number of potholes. Beware, driver, you’d better slow down! You wouldn’t want to damage your tires or cause the front end to go out of alignment!

Both these blacktop sections have been repaired in the last year. Both have now regained their former bad personalities.

It’s obvious what needs to be done. These road sections need to be dug out, all the way down to the foundation, and be reconstructed with a new base. That, of course, would be expensive and time-consuming. I expect both the highway section and the city street will be patched again instead.

Ah, I hate it when God has to reconstruct part of me. There are messy places in me that, when patched, don’t seem to stay fixed. I revert back to old habits. Just like bad spots in the highway, my family and friends have to reluctantly conclude, “That’s the way he’ll always be.”

My loving God is always working to make me better. He would rebuild me completely if I’d let him. He’d help me build a new, lasting foundation. Too often I tell Him that it would be too difficult and too expensive.

“Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.” Psalm 127:1
