Not Watching Baseball

August 13, 2022

Maybe this is about baseball, maybe not.

I decided a few years ago that I was watching too much baseball. Since then, I only keep up with my favorite Atlanta Braves by checking the score of their game on my IPad.

Now, don’t think I’m any less a fan. I know the players, their batting averages and pitching statistics, and even lots about players on the Braves’ minor league teams. I just can’t afford to glue myself to the television screen for three hours a night. I don’t worship them, know what I mean?

The Braves are really good this year! They are in a tight race with the New York Mets to win their division in the National League.

Lately I find myself checking the baseball score for longer periods of time. At first I paid just a little more attention. Then, on close games, I’d catch myself watching the results of every pitch for several minutes at a time. Before I knew it I was considering staying up late to check on the game as it went along, to the very end.

Did you know that a baseball game is not decided by if Dennis Lanning is watching or not? I have found that the final score is the same even if I don’t see it until breakfast time.

That’s how bad habits, and sins in general, make their way into our lives. A little isn’t so bad, then occasionally a little more. Then we compare ourselves to someone else and decide we’re not as bad as them.

It’s a focus thing. I have found a great life by following God just as closely as I can.

Matthew 22:37, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind.”
