No Thanks

Isn't it strange that the words "Thank you" have become less popular? The words just aren't heard as much anymore. Of course "Thank you" is not needed any less than in the past.

Oh, I know we hear those catchy little phrases at the big discount stores more than ever. "Thank you for shopping our ________," the girl says with a blank expression. As you leave, you see the little sign on the register: Don't forget to say "Thank you for shopping our _____." That's duty, not thanks.

It's just so hard for a society that prides itself in being self-sufficient to say thanks. We can hardly say "thank you" because that is admission that we didn't handle everything ourselves. In the same way, we have a hard time acknowledging God's help.

Saying thank you is not an admission of our own weaknesses. It's a chance to build our sister or brother up. It's part of that "love your neighbor as yourself" stuff, part of the Goldnen Rule. In Hebrews 10:24, we read, "And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds."

As we learn to be grateful to one another, we'll learn to be grateful to God. I guess the opposite is true, too.
