New Seasons
August 29, 2022
“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1.
I’ve been very familiar with this verse since it appeared as part of a song by The Byrds in1965. As a 12-year-old, it seemed that there were a million years ahead of me. I was just beginning to put the pieces of my life together. I had no idea that lyric, “to everything there is a season,” was from the Bible, and that it was full of God’s wisdom.
Now I’m a little farther along, actually a lot farther. I see that some things in my life don’t go on forever.
I don’t always get to choose which things.
Will there be a day when I have to give up ice cream? Horrors! How about coffee? I’ve already had to stop drinking coffee after two in the afternoon. I have had to face the fact that I can no longer climb a step ladder with both hands full. (I’ve seen the addition of some common sense!)
Perhaps I’ve pastored my last church. I don’t know. God does.
But it does not mean that we’ll come to a point where every season ends. I’ve seen many beginnings this year. We’re renovating a house. I’m now part of the rotation of teaching Sunday School I’m making strides forward in my writing career.
Will this be the last group of fresh starts? I know it won’t be. There may even be another career somewhere in my future.
For everything there is a season. As long as the earth exists there will be winters. Spring follows.
