Misdirection

September 21, 2022

Joy and I have just returned from our second annual apple country tour. We spent the weekend going from farm market to farm market in north Georgia.

We stayed in a “villa,” the name of which fooled us into expecting fancy European-style frills. It turned out to be a nice little cabin in the woods. It was great, but not the only misdirection. The map we received at check-in indicated a short drive down a straight road, then go across a bridge and turn right to find our villa in a row with a few others. Actually, it was a mile of twists and turns and ups and downs, with dozens of deer on the side and middle of the narrow roads. Would we run out of gas before we got there? It was not a short drive, and not a straight line at all.

The other misnomer that stands out in my memory is the brand name of the clothes dryer. Friends, I think Frigidaire is a marvelous brand name for a refrigerator, but who wants “frigid air” to dry their clothes? It would take forever.

By the way, we got some great peaches in apple country!

II Corinthians 5:19-20 says that we ought to make a point of looking like the name Christian implies we’d look. An ambassador should represent their nationality, right? “So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us. We entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

What’s that old saying? “If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.” As Christians, we should do our best to look and act the part, and that’s easier if it goes ‘bone deep.’
