Make My Day

April 19, 2023

I was lost.

I have been faithfully fighting the enemy, but my resources were getting low.

Actually, it’s an old, old enemy. Poison ivy tries constantly to spring up at the edges of the yard, but I spray the occasional new sprig with a compound from Home Depot, and I keep the upper hand. It takes constant vigilance.

I’ve seen vines get an inch thick and grow into the upper branches of a tree. That time the spray had to be augmented with an axe. I know how evil an enemy I face.

Anyway, as I said at the beginning, I was running low on poison ivy spray and went to Home Depot to buy more. I was lost for the first few minutes, wandering around the Garden Department. I found a gallon size—-too much! That’s all I could find. An employee was nearby, doing some work at the register.

I told her what I was looking for, poison ivy spray, and that I’d found a gallon size but needed the smaller spray bottle. You know, some people just love helping the lost, and she had resources. On her hand-held inventory device she found exactly what I needed. “Aisle 11D. Follow me.” We set out for our destination at a brisk pace.

Aisle 11D had a vast array of weed killer. Not what I was looking for. She looked at the shelves with a puzzled look on her face. Then I spied it, poison ivy spray, the right size. “Thank you,” I said. “Good job!”

As my helper walked away, I heard her talking on the phone to a friend, sharing her pleasure at helping the lost find what they were looking for.

Wow, do we still get excited when we lead lost people to the right path?
