Just Latch On

October 1, 2022

What a day! It’s fall, y’all, and today our family is involved with a big estate sale. Also I’m scheduled to compete in the state horseshoes tournament. Thursday marks the beginning of the Georgia National Fair.

Did you ever wish for a day with nothing going on?

Life keeps happening. Even when you’re on vacation the monthly bills keep accumulating. The grass keeps growing. The car gets a little older and more repair-prone. Children keep growing up.

Somebody said, “Stop the world! I want to get off!”

Some people worry about more gray hairs. I worry about less gray hairs, less hair altogether!

Is there anything that doesn’t change? It’s been said that the only constant is that there will be change. I disagree. I know that God is “the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8). I need something to anchor my life to, when everything is changing around me. What good is an anchor if it moves? I need an anchor!

I’ve seen folks latch on to other things that look like an anchor, but they’ve been disappointed when their ‘anchor’ turns out to be undependable. If their life was depending on a job, that can be gone in a day. (Ever hear about a retiree that has no life when he no longer has to get up and go to work? It happens all the time.). There are people that anchor their lives on a big bank account, that doesn’t turn out to be adequate.

Friends die or move away. Fame ends. Neighborhoods and cities change.

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—- from whence will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
