Inheritance

January 30, 2023

The Old Testament of the Bible speaks of inheritance in a different way than we are used to. We usually see that all the children divide the father’s property evenly when he dies. In those olden Biblical times, however, the father’s property was divided equally between sons, except that the firstborn son got an extra share. For instance, when Isaac died his property was divided between two sons. It was divided in thirds, with each son getting a third and one getting an extra share; that means one son received two thirds of the inheritance while the other received one third. Quite a difference!

The extra share did not always go to the firstborn son. Jacob got more than Esau, by trading a bowl of stew for it. When Jacob died, he gave the extra portion to his eleventh-born favorite son, Joseph.

I’ve got a trick question for you. Romans 8:17 says we are joint heirs with Christ. How much can we expect from God? Of course God is eternal, but as a joint heir with Christ, if God’s kingdom were divided amongst Christ and all Christians, how much is yours or mine?

Philippians 4:9 says, “Our God will supply all your needs, according to his riches in glory.”

God’s supply is endless. You need not worry about there not being enough mercy or grace or blessings to go around. An infinite supply is still infinite, no matter how many shares it is divided into.

Share God’s love with everyone you can. It won’t run out.
