I'm Bigger than That

June 17, 2023

Am I saying goodbye to happiness? Not really. I just need a change.

I love wearing brightly-colored socks with wild patterns. The original brand was Happy Socks, but now many companies make colorful socks for men. I started ten years ago with a few pairs that I would wear only occasionally, especially on days when I needed a little boost in my spirits. My friend Rodney said he wore them all the time. Why not? Soon I also was wearing them every day.

The problem is not the socks, but my feet. I am on the edge of normal. I wear a shoe size 12, and the standard size for socks is a range that ends at my shoe size. Therefore, the colorful socks I buy are just a little tight. This is a daily occurrence. I’ve put up with this for years, for the sake of adding a little life to my wardrobe.

Last week it occurred to me that, by now, somebody must make a larger size of these “happy” socks. I went to my favorite Amazon website. Wow!

They are on their way to my residence and should arrive today.

We put up with uncomfortable parts of our lives because it’s easier to “go with the flow” than to make a change. Things that had once brought us happiness just don’t anymore. Even good, decent things in our lives can run their course, when God wants to lead us to something better.

But change is hard. If I could be a little quicker, a bit more responsive to what God wants to do with me, I’ll bet I wouldn’t sometimes find myself only on the edge of happiness.

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of all people.” John 1:4
