Contemplating a Hair Cut

March 6, 2023

I keep getting haircuts, but there is less to cut each time. It took my “stylist” less than five minutes this time. She couldn’t do anything with the major bald spot in the middle.

My eldest granddaughter has long, beautiful hair. Her mother sometimes braids it or puts it in a pony tail. It looks great on her, and I keep asking my granddaughter to braid mine. She just laughs.

I have wondered about just skipping haircuts. Lots of men, even some my own age, have long hair. I would not seriously consider that.

I get tired of shaving, too. I could just grow a beard. I might not even trim it.

Some things we just have to keep doing. I don’t see many senior men with long beards or long hair. It’s just not the accepted thing. How many things, beyond grooming, do we make a habit because of what are our cultural norms?

It doesn’t take laws to keep us in line with our culture. We innately want to be like those around us. We want to be accepted, loved, and admired. There is a normal way to go. Those on a different, narrow path are seen as either weird, wrong, or rebellious. Occasionally the person who is different is seen as a leader and the one that has found a better way that most of us have missed.

As Christians we are called to follow God’s leading in choosing what path we should take. It’s not the most-travelled route. What others may see as rebellion or just a mistake, we see following God as the only right choice.

I don’t regret the road I travel. God is a great companion as I go.

Matthew 7:14, “But the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
