Commitment

Where do we learn the concept of commitment? It seems some folks are more inclined to be committed in all they do, while others seem to always be half-committed in any endeavor they engage in. I've been pondering this in relation to chruch attendance and membership.

Certainly family upbringing has a lot to do with commitment. If your parents were the type to never miss a Lions Club meeting, or Sunday School, or a day of work, I believe you'll be somewhat the same. Even without your parents talking to you about commitmenht, I think their example will influence your habits greatly.

Your views about honesty relate to commitment. If you don't mind fudging on your taxes, you won't mind telling your boss you were sick when you actually just needed a day for Christmas shopping. However, if you are scrupulously honest, you will be the kind that always keeps your word. And you'll remember that when you joined the church, you promised to support it with your prayers, your presence, your gifts and your service. Your honesty makes you show up on Sunday.

Somehow God's commitment rubs off on us, though I don't understand it all yet. God keeps His word, He's honest, He's completely dependable. Those are things I build my faith on. God is committed to us, though historically humans have faltered in their commitment to Him.

I think I can see all around me that the more we're committed to God, the more committed, and honest, and dependable we are in all areas of our lives.
