Christmas Lights

December 19, 2022

I’m the kind of guy who makes up stories about little things I see. If I sit in the middle of the mall, for instance, watching people go by, I guess things about their lives that may or may not be true. For instance, the old guy sitting on the bench in front of Belk’s, snoozing, is probably waiting for his wife. “Just take my credit card, dear. Take your time. I’ll be here when you get done.”

A lady filling up her cart at the grocery store is probably having the family over this weekend. She’s got macaroni and cheese, sodas, and chocolate candy. I think she may be just having the grandchildren for the weekend.

The man buying just one big, thick steak is probably home alone tonight while his wife visits her sister in Macon.

Anyway, I wonder what Christmas lights say about a home. I see a yard with a lot of those blow-up figures and assume they have children in the house, or just a child-like happiness with the season. A brick house with a wreath in every window looks dignified; does that mean the inhabitants do their best to do what’s expected? A nativity scene almost always indicates a family with a living faith resides there.

Maybe a home exterior decorated with lots and lots of lights indicates pure joy with the season, or maybe just a willingness to be flashy. I’m not sure. I do know that it nudges me that this is the time of year when it’s a little easier to talk about things of God. We celebrate Jesus.

Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine among people that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven..”
