Aging Well

June 28, 2023

It’s class reunion season. Have you noticed? It can be scary.

Ideally, we all want to look exactly like we did in high school. We want to recognize everyone and we want everyone to recognize us. We look at our old high school yearbooks and look at all the pictures, because we want to be able to call each person by name. It’ll be just like old times.

But it’s never like old times. People have gray hair or white hair or no hair. Most everyone has gained weight. (Some went on crash diets before the reunion, hoping to look like one of the few who did not gain weight, but some of these folks have seen you in your “greater days.”.)

There have been other changes. One never lived up to his potential and another surprised us all. One was so gorgeous we thought she’d marry quickly, but she never did. Another married five times.

Change comes to everyone. Yes, I hate it, too. Our bodies change, our levels of knowledge change, our income fluctuates, and so much more. We gain wisdom, by making mistakes more often than not.

The good news is that we are supposed to change, and it doesn’t all have to be downhill.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” II Corinthians 5:17

God can make you so much better that your classmates will hardly recognize you. Be that guy.
