Something to Lean On

I love my pulpit. It’s solid, like God. Some fine craftsman lovingly built this, many years ago.

Is it becoming a relic?

I know worship services are changing. I definitely don’t want to be an ‘old fogey’ and hold on to things that no longer bring people closer to God. But I love my pulpit.

Lately our worship services have been seen by more people online than attend our in-person worship services. I understand that the coronavirus has something to do with this, but the numbers aren’t even close. We’re talking about twenty times more people watching online.

As is long-standing tradition, I’ve been preaching from the pulpit. Of course I have! That’s what preachers do. We’ve discovered, though, that those people watching online can hear the message better if I preach from the floor level instead. What should I do?

The most comfortable solution, at least for me, would be for those folks at home to come sit in the pews at the church. They could hear me better, and they’d learn to have a reverence for that pulpit that was dedicated to God so many years ago.

However, the more sensible solution would be for me to preach from floor level, even if it means using a music stand to spread my notes out on.

What is this world coming to?

My greatest desire is to see it come to God.
