Foggy Fruit
I have learned to love avocados, but they still seem a little mysterious to me. Maybe the word I'm looking for is not "mysterious" but "exotic."
I shied away from them for years because I didn't know how to relate to them. How do you get at one? How do you peel it? What do you do with that seed/pit thing?
After being subjected to avocado in a few salads, I decided I might like to get to know an avocado more personally. I bought one and cut into it. After a little trial and error, I became adept at peeling off the skin. I poked the seed with the tip of my knife and gently pried it out.
It took practice to peel and pit an avocado efficiently, but the fruit is tasty and definitely worth the trouble.
I'm getting better at knowing how to judge the ripeness of an avocado. I still make mistakes, but because of the reward of a great avocado I will persist.
I have several friends that are like avocados. No, none of them are actually that color. They are worth the trouble, because of how great they are inside. Even working around the pit (one bad trait) seems no big deal after awhile.
Don't be afraid of making friends with someone that seems very different from you. It may take time to understand them and get used to their uniqueness, but once you've invested time in them, they may certainly became your greatest treasure.
