Just Call Me Grease

I’m in the wrong line at the bank drive-through again. The other line is moving steadily. I could have finished by now.

There’s really no perfect way to pick the right line. Nothing about the vehicles ahead tells me if they have a big transaction or a small one, simple or complicated.

Of course, if I were the bank teller I’d do my best to give careful attention to each customer. I’d want them to know they are important to me.

Does it sound like I want the world to revolve around me? I want the teller to rush with the transactions of those ahead of me, but to handle my transaction with unhurried care.

I could wish that all humanity would live careful and unrushed lives, but I know that’s not possible. We have deadlines, crying babies, fights with our spouses, plumbing emergencies. Life can be a mess.

I have found that mature Christians have more patience, kindness, and self-control. Galatians 5 says that’s a result of God’s spirit living inside us. If everyone had that same patience, this life sure would run smoothly!

No, not everyone is a mature Christian.

Now the car ahead of me at the bank has finished her transaction. I put my car in gear, ready to pull ahead. Well, how do you like that? The driver is having a pleasant conversation with the teller appearing on the little screen, before driving off. I turn my car off. I’m a mature Christian. Let them have a happy time together.

If not for mature Christians like us, this world would fall apart.
