Same Old, Same Old

We're not the kind to discard old Christmas decorations. From the plastic snowman in the yard to the paper Christmas tree topper, we become attached to those things we decorate our home with at Christmas. In fact, we still have a few things that brightened our home on our very first Christmas as a married couple, over forty years ago.

We have certain places each item belongs. Granted, as a United Methodist minister, we've lived in several different parsonages. Once a decoration finds its location in our new home, though, it usually occupies the same position every year, until we move again.

Are you that way, too? If I took a picture of how your home was decorated four years ago, would the picture look exactly the same this year? Are we that rigid, stiff, and unimaginative? Yes. When we find just the right place for a decoration, it would seem like moving backwards to put it in a wrong.....er, I mean different.....place on subsequent years.

We need order. We need solid ground. We need something where it is supposed to be.

I suppose that translates to our Christian faith. We have a God of order, who made sense out of chaos. God is our rock, solid ground to stand on. God has determined what is right and good, and we can depend on it. Is that dull and unimaginative? No, it's just solid footing from which to live a creative and lively life.
