Best Day of the Year?
I love Thanksgiving Day! It's not the great feast, or getting together with family, or football. This particular holiday is just so blatantly Christian!
Our other holy days have been intruded on by secular additions. Easter has its Easter Bunny, marshmallow peeps, hiding eggs, and chocolate rabbits. Christmas holy themes must share space with Santa and the pressures of gift giving. Even Halloween was once All Hallows Eve, but it seems its Christian themes are completely hidden now.
Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks to God for our many blessings. All nature cries out that God has given us a beautiful planet, foods of every kind, and even life itself.
When we give thanks for anything, it has to be directed toward somebody. Thanks is not just general good will. We are thankful toward some other being, and so much of our praise has nowhere else to go but to God. When we give thanks for family, friends, a place to live, our job, we trace the roots of all those things back to God.
"Praise the Lord! O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever." Psalm 106:1
"Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture." Psalm 100:3
