Painting My Shoes
Well, it's time to paint my shoes. The paint on my horseshoes has been worn away by the impact of dirt, sand, clay, and other horseshoes. You can imagine the force of impact when a two-and-a-half-pound metal object lands after a forty-foot pitch. It's not hard to explain how a nice coat of paint has to be regularly renewed on horseshoes.
Horseshoe pitchers paint their shoes a wide variety of colors, from pink to gold to lime green. I love to paint mine blue, but so do many of my friends, so I add a distinguishing white stripe on mine. In addition, many pitchers paint the toes (points) of their shoes white, as an aid in scoring.
Freshly-painted horseshoes do not make me a better player. It does, however, let people know that I'm serious about the sport. If a store let its sign fade and chip, I would assume they don't want additional customers. If a doctor doesn't keep up with new medical discoveries and techniques, potential patients think he or she isn't serious about the wellness of their patients.
If a Christian doesn't read their Bible or ever attend Bible study, does it look like they care about their part in building God's kingdom?
"No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is worthy of the kingdom of God." Luke 9:62
