There's Got to Be Another Way

I watched out my office window as two ladies traipsed across my yard. Were they looking for the church office? I decided to wait and see.

They seemed interested in the cemetery behind the church. The entrance to the grounds were blocked on the church end, since a new arch was being constructed. The other way in was on the other side of my house, and was also the way to my parsonage driveway.

The ladies continued on across the lawn to the cemetery, going through a deep ditch not conducive to nice clothes. They made it to their destination, the cemetery.

If they had only known about the other way in to the cemetery, they would have had a much easier trek.

I had to chuckle. How many times have I also just headed off to my destination without pausing to consider whether there might be a better path? Maybe we're all like that. We get our minds on where we want to go, and then just head out.

Jesus said to count the cost before we begin a project (Luke 14:28-33). That's what I'm talking about! But a lot of people take this to mean that we should not try anything we cannot do on our own. Are you kidding? Counting the cost is meant to show us ahead of time how we need to deeply rely on God. Sometimes our reliance is more to fight Murphy's Law ("If anything can go wrong, it will.") than any more obvious obstacle.
