Every Tie Is Not a Shackle
Maybe it was professional baseball that started this. Maybe it was some other sport. We are a country of free agents!
It's harder to get people to commit to membership in clubs or churches than it used to be. We don't want to "sign on the dotted line." It's also tougher to depend on people showing up for an activity. We want to be free to make choices at the last minute.
It's even difficult to make people understand the necessity of an RSVP (French for Respondez, s'il vous plait, or "Please Reply"). When someone plans a big event, like a wedding or wedding reception, it's incredibly helpful if they know how many to plan for!
Maybe I understand. Commitment means pressure. If you promise to do something, others expect you to follow through. But I want to be able to depend on people! Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, "And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken." I can't do life alone.
Of course, I'm never truly alone. Jesus will always be alive in the life of his disciples, as it says it Matthew 28:20: "And remember, I am with you always."
