Upside-Down Church

People like variety, right? Every routine needs to be changed at times to help us understand why we do things in a particular order. It's been said that variety is the spice of life.

I had more of a taste for mixing things up when I was a teenager. I wanted each day to have its own personality. I wanted to meet new people, explore new woods and streams, try new sports.

I still like variety, but now I also understand why people like parts of life to be unchanging. All of us seem to need places to anchor our lives. We need a 'home base.'

I've wondered if churches need to occasionally do something different. Sure, at times we have music by a special guest or maybe a different preacher. What would happen if we really turned our worship service upside down? If we did last things first, and first things last, would it help the congregation appreciate why things are done in the same order week after week?

I don't think I'd like it. I think I would feel uncomfortable.

Or maybe I'm just the one who needs it the most.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6
