When the Green Grass Withers

We need rain! It's been so dry that no one on our street can water their lawn enough to keep it from turning brown. Temperatures have been in the upper nineties.

If I had control, it would rain at least a quarter inch each night, after most everybody had gone to bed. (God knows how huge a mess I'd make, if I were in charge of even such a small thing as that!)

I've got to learn to appreciate brown grass. I know that it's part of creation's renewal process, and I remember how incredible the new growth is when rain finally comes.

Maybe that's the hardest part of the Christian life, the brown grass times. As God renews us, something dies and we are filled with remorse, until it is replaced by something better. I've made great friends with my present lifestyle, yet God asks us to rejoice as that lifestyle is left behind.

Psalm 104:30: "When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the earth."

Philippians 4:4: "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice."
