Lent Me What?

Well, I missed Mardi Gras again.

The name is French for "fat Tuesday," you know. It's the last day before the beginning of the church season of Lent, on Ash Wednesday. February 10 was Ash Wednesday.

Since Lent is traditionally a time of 'giving something up for Lent," as a way of remembering Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross, Mardi Gras became popular as a sort of last fling before a period of deprivation.

Now, from my experience of going on many diets in the past, it would seem the worst thing you could do is have one final blowout before a time of strict discipline.

So I missed Mardi Gras again.

Until Easter, on March 27 this year, I'll be cutting out all those little snacks that have made me gain twenty pounds in the last two years. That's often how temptation works, isn't it? It's just a little sin, over days and months. Before we realize it, we've eased away from a close relationship with God.

So, every time I reach for that extra snack and stop, I'll remember that Jesus died for my sins. Even ones as simple as this.

Have a blessed Lent. Remember the cross.
