Put the Car in Gear

I just finished one of those ten-week Bible study courses, including daily workbook assignments and a two-hour weekly group session. Whew! It took a lot of dedication for all of us. The fellowship was great, both the light chatter and the deep sharing. We'll start another study in January.

What becomes of those Bible studies? Do they really change anything?

When my wife and I moved a few months ago, I had to sort through my office files. Why move anything that is no longer useful? One section of files was notes and notebooks from twenty-three years of continuing education seminars I attended for work. Considering that I attended an average of two seminars per year, there were a lot of files to sort through. I was amazed how little of that volume of files was still relevant!

With the perspective of a few years, things that seemed important at one moment can be recognized as much less than timeless after a little while. Life needs regular sorting through!

How do we assure that what we learn today will keep its relevance? You know the answer: Use it!

So, in this time between Bible studies, my responsibility is to put into practice what God has taught me in the last ten weeks. If it was important enough to invest my time in, it's too important to just toss in the junk pile later.
