This Job Stinks, But I Don't Mind

Surely it's an unpleasant job.

I went to the dentist this week, to get a lost filling replaced. The tooth didn't hurt, but the filling had fallen out a few weeks ago and needed replacing.

First, Dr. Cook gave me a shot to numb the area and he stepped out to give some time for the shot to take effect.

Anyway, as I sat in the chair, I thought, "Surely being a dentist is an unpleasant job. They spend hours a day, looking inside mouths, at decay, at chipped and broken teeth and at deteriorating fillings. I suppose some patients even have bad breath! What a job."

Yet dentists are cheerful. They must find satisfaction in helping patients get their smile and their 'eating machine' back in order.

There is a parallel with our jobs as ambassadors for Christ. We are to be "about our Father's business," helping the lost and hurting around us get their lives back in order, and helping people restore a broken-down relationship with God.

It may look to be an unpleasnat job. As we act as God's instrument to restore and clean up lives, we may find ourselves helping to handle a lot of bad-smelling trash. Yet we have great joy as Christians when we see lives and relationships restored.

It's not really such a bad job. It has great rewards. It just may look unpleasant to those not involved.

Being an ambassador for Christ is your job.
